Gaps in reported energy and sustainability data are a common challenge.These gaps are the result of leased locations where utility bills are paid indirectly, or can be the result of insufficient or nonexistent data collection systems and processes. Solving for gaps is critical to getting internal and external sustainability reporting right. Such gaps represent a risk to the quality and completeness of an organization’s GHG emission inventory and company investor disclosure (through the Carbon Disclosure Project), and they can also jeopardize the entire decision-making process around an organization’s investments in energy efficiency.

Software-based cleantech like energy management software (EMS) is a fast-growing segment as interest in hardware-based cleantech wanes. Leading EMS vendors like C3 and Hara offer tools that allow organizations to measure their energy consumption and, often, identify operational inefficiencies. That can lead to savings in energy consumption as well as real dollars, a fact that’s attracting some business owners’ attention.

Rodrigo J Prudencio was named the new CEO at Hara, a cloud-based energy and resource data management firm. Prudencio was most recently a partner at Nth Power, a Hara investor along with GE and KP. He replaces Dan Leff, Hara’s CEO for less than two years and formerly COO of Enron Energy Services.

Some entrepreneurs had to change plans because assumptions didn’t pan out. Hara Software Inc., an energy management software company, initially was founded to help large corporations track and reduce carbon emissions.
It restructured to focus on managing energy for large clients when federal carbon legislation wasn’t forthcoming, said Dan Leff, who replaced its former chief executive last year.
Think of it as a calorie counter for large corporations.
Hara, a relatively new software company formed by SAP and Oracle alumni, has developed a corporate application that can track natural resource inputs-fossil fuels, water, electricity, industrial chemicals, mercury, fuel consumed in travel-and waste products and then provide recommendations to optimize operations, according to CEO Amit Chatterjee. US startup Hara on Monday made a public debut with a service that shows businesses, organizations and governments how to profit from being Earth friendly.
